Flatiron Martini

Martinis. Crisp, cool and dangerous. A great combination for a Friday night. With the booming trend of craft cocktails in the city, I decided to try my hand at making some in the luxury of my own home. Now, martinis are one of those drinks which everyone has a difference of opinion on what exactly goes into it. Gin, Vodka, Vermouth? Do you garnish with olives, onions, a twist? Shaken, stirred? What it boils down to is personal preference. "Craft cocktails" can be just that, handmade and tailored to your specific taste.

I attempted a modified version of a recipe I found in my recipe book, The Craft Cocktail Party by Julie Reiner. I've always preferred vodka over gin in my martini's with specific preference for Grey Goose. Julie recommends Stoli Ohranj but I found the Grey Goose L'orange worked just as well. I had concerns that there was way too much orange flavor going on with the orange vodka, orange liqueur and orange twist, but it all blended well together and wasn't overpowering at all! Being new to the home bartending game, this was an easy one to attempt. Here's the quick and simple recipe I used to make this delicious treat.


  • 2 oz Lillet Blanc

  • 2 oz Grey Goose L'Orange Vodka or alternate orange vokda

  • 1/4 oz Cointreau Triple sec


  1. Chill serving glasses in freezer while you prepare the cocktail mixture.

  2. In a mixing glass, combine the vodka and Lillet. Fill with ice and stir until chilled, approximately 20-25 seconds.

  3. Pour the Cointreau into the chilled glass and swirl to coat the glass. Excess liquid can be discarded.

  4. Strain the chilled mixture into the prepared glass. 

  5. Garnish with an orange twist.
